King Arthur, step aside. This ‘sword’ isn’t for you.

As a summer full of cricket continues to roll on, designer and metalwork-extraordinaire Edward Slater has produced a piece of art that’s combined one of England’s oldest sports with one of its many much-loved fables…The Sword In The Stone.

The fairytale is a true underdog story where an enchanted sword set in a small boulder appears in a king-less kingdom and only the rightful heir to the throne will be able to free the weapon from the stone.

Edward, inspired by the Cricket World Cup, has re-imagined the historic tale and adapted it to England’s pursuit for glory by sculpting a solid brass cricket bat and set it into a granite boulder, which has engraved on it…"Eoin's Excalibur".

It’s been a month-long process for Edward, where the end goal is to have spectators engaging with it on the day of the World Cup Final at Lord’s, but this is yet to be confirmed.

“It is my desire to donate this work to the MCC with the hope that it can be positioned somewhere outside Lord’s Cricket Ground during the World Cup Final (whether England are playing or not). ”
